Let’s turn our attention today to Mercedes-Benz and in particular their 5G-Tronic automatic transmission. This 5-speed overdrive automatic transmission has been the workhorse for Mercedes-Benz for quite some time now. It has only been recently that it is being replaced by the 7G-Tronic transmission which was first introduced in 2003.
All V12-power cars like the S600 and S65 AMG still have the 5G-Tronic, and of course many of the used Mercedes-Benzes on the road have the 5G.
This transmission is also used by Chrysler and their transmission is designated the NAG1, or New Automatic Gearbox.
The gear ratios for the 5G are 3.932 in first, 2.408 in second, 1.486 in 3rd, 1.00 in 4th and .83 in 5th. There is a performance feature set in Mercedes-Benz transmissions that includes manual mode and active downshifting. The transmission will maintain the same gear when cornering at high speed and it can also automatically downshift before overtaking.
The 5G has been used in the following cars:
1996-1999 Mercedes-Benz W140
2000-2005 W220
2006-present W221
1998-2002 Jaguar X308
1998-2002 Jaguar XK
2005-2008 Dodge Magnum
2005-present Chrysler 300
2006-present Dodge Charger
2008-present Dodge Challenger
2007-2011 Dodge Nitro
2006-2011 Jeep Commander
2005-2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee
2011-present Dodge Durango
2011-present Jeep Wrangler
And at various times also included in the Mercedes-Benz B-Class, C-Class, SLR, R170, R129, R230 and W463 to name a few. Obviously this transmission has done a considerable job over the years.
In 2002 a variation was introduced called the AMC Speedshift. This featured a mechanical lock-up of the torque converter from first gear and a steering wheel mounted shifter. There is also a AMG Speedshift R which has three manual modes and is used in the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.
What does this all mean to you? Maybe nothing, but then again maybe you just feel better knowing that your vehicle has such a highly-respected transmission in it.
