Audi Direct Shift Transmissions

transparts2.jpgIf you ever wondered about the excellent engineering in an Audi transmission, then this blog is for you.

Audi uses what is called a direct-shift gearbox, often referred to as a DSG.  It is an electronically-controlled dual-clutch transmission with a multiple-shaft gearbox in a transaxle design, without the use of a traditional clutch pedal.

The first actual dual-clutch transmissions were produced by Porsche in the 1980s.  The DSG is two separate manual gearboxes and clutches contained in one housing and working as one.  It was originally designed by BorgWarner and is licensed to the Volkswagen Group.  The dual clutches account for faster shift times and eliminates the torque converter that is normally found in a traditional automatic transmission.

The first dual-clutch transmission in a series production car was found in the VW Golf Mk4 R32, and later in the Audi TT 3.2.  It had six forward speeds and one reverse.  By 2008 this transmission became a seven-speed and was used in smaller front-wheel drive cars with smaller displacement engines and lower torque outputs like the VW Golf and the VW Polo Mk5.

When used in the Audis the transmission is called an S tronic, and it was originally used in longitudinally mounted engines.  It has a dual-lubrication system that increases overall reliability by eliminating cross-contamination of debris.

The end result is a transmission that takes about 8 milliseconds to upshift; by comparison, the sequential manual transmission in the Ferrari F430 takes 60 milliseconds to shift, a considerable difference.

What this all means for drivers is almost effortless shifting capabilities and longer lasting transmission performance, and that means less wear and tear and maintenance, and that of course means less money spent on maintenance.

Let’s face it folks, technology is moving forward by leaps and bounds, and as new technologies are invented the pros at PDQ transmission parts are right there learning and tinkering, because we want to stay ahead of the pack when it comes to transmission knowledge.  We have built our reputation on our knowledge and expertise, so we do everything we can to learn about these new transmissions as they are developed.  Would you expect less from PDQ Transmission Parts? Of course you wouldn’t!

Audi transmissions, a part of the Volkswagen Group, and that means high-quality engineering and craftsmanship.  You can drive with confidence when you drive a car and transmission manufactured by the VW Group, leaders in automobile engineering.
