DSC00035Let’s face it, your transmission is an integral part of your vehicle, and quite frankly the thought of transmission problems is enough to scare quite a few drivers.  Sure there are times the problem is a small one and easily fixed, but there are also times when the problem is mechanical in nature and it is going to cost an arm and a leg to have it fixed.

One thing is for sure: the longer you go without getting the transmission fixed the worse your problem will be, so it is best to do a little diagnoses if possible so you can head off possible large problems.

At PDQ transmission parts we are all about fixing the problem.  Chances are if it is a problem with a transmission then our experts have had to face it before.  We had our staff sit down and write out a few basic transmission troubles and their causes so that you had a little information to go by in diagnosing your transmission. We hope these help you.

  • Transmission does not go in gear or it gets stuck in gear:  internal parts are either worn or broken.  Shift linkages could use adjusting or the computer sensors might be broken.
  • Transmission slips between gears:  most often this signals an internal problem in the transmission and also signals that the transmission needs to be replaced.
  • Noises coming from transmission: most notably buzzes, clicks or clunks, and this is not good and usually means you need to have your transmission rebuilt or replaced.
  • Pan leaks:  you either need to replace a gasket or replace the entire pan and gasket.
  • Front seal leak:  the front seal needs to be replaced, and the part is cheap but the job is expensive because the transmission needs to be removed from the engine to replace the seal.
  • Tailshaft housing leaks:  on rear wheel drive vehicles this is a quick fix and inexpensive; on front-wheel drive vehicles this requires removing the axles and it can be an expensive repair.
  • Transmission does not move:  usually means either the torque converter is going bad or the transmission fluid is low. Could also mean the clutch needs replacing.

We hope that’s been helpful for all of you out there.  Remember that transmission problems do not necessarily mean a major repair bill, but ignoring the problems most definitely will mean an expensive fix down the road. It is better to head off major problems with some preventative maintenance early on.
